THE ARK

by Cathrina Constantine

I am cocooned in mental torment. The physical pain and hefty drugs keep my eyes from opening. The sway of the ship rocks me into dreamland time and again. Dreams of verdant valleys, my horse lapping a cool drink at the babbling brook, and my sweet home shaded in willows imbue me with pleasure.

Then an apocalyptic montage invades my brain? No—Return to the valley.

“B, time to wake up.” I hear someone call. Is it Mom? Not Mom, she died, right?

“B,” a cajoling voice and callused fingers sweep my forehead.

Mom’s dead. They’re all dead. I’m dead.

Scenes of hysterical screams penetrate my slumber like a knife to the gut. Speeding in the van for the port. A ship. They’re coming. Time’s running out. Thousands of people, herding, pushing, shoving, squealing—I can’t control my raging heart beating out of my chest.

“Calm down, B. You’re safe. Safe. Do you hear me?”

I’m being trampled. I can’t breathe! Can’t breathe!

My lungs are collapsing.

“Give her the sedative,” says a female voice.

“No more,” a stern baritone feeds my ears. “It’s been over a week. Time to get her out of the induced coma.”

“She’s going into shock again. Her heart rate’s spiking big time. Give it to her or she could die.”

Grappling hands. Being dragged. I’m cold. Hot. Pain.
